Sorry, I keep finding out a little more. The im-config man page explains it pretty well. Basically im_launch will get run at startup when a user has requested/configured multiple languages which include non-western scripts such as Chinese and Japanese. This would explain why some people have this problem and others don’t and it explains it for me because I have support for all sorts of weird (to me) scripts on my desktop machine but not on my laptop.
