Ok now I’ve got a different issue. So when I record my mix I have to turn my computer volume up to hear it on playback. But when I turn it up then I am battling with that audio and the audio from my portable speaker which I have hooked up to my controller and the audio from my headphones while I am mixing. How do I increase the audio for my recorded audio on Audacity without having to hear it while I am trying to record my mix. Does that make sense?
I’m not sure I understand what you’re trying to do.
- You record a mix in Audacity
- You play back that mix from Audacity
- At the same time you are trying to mix in some other source?
- You have to turn up your computer volume to hear the mix recorded in Audacity?
- When you turn up the computer your other source also gets louder?
How do I increase the audio for my recorded audio on Audacity without having to hear it while I am trying to record my mix. Does that make sense?
I don’t understand that at all.

So not at the same time. I am talking about different times during the recording of the mix. While I am mixing and recording the audio I have to turn up the audio on my Mac to get an audible recording of my mix which then gives me more audio to filter through while I am mixing.
Then on playback the audio is as loud as I have it during recording in which I battle with keeping it low enough to not distract me but have it loud enough to hear the recording on playback.
Does that help?
So …
During recording you have to turn up the volume on the Mac to properly hear what you are recording.
During playback the volume is too loud and you have to turn down the volume on the Mac.
Is that correct?
– Bill
No when I turn up the volume on my Mac the recording is lower in comparison to how high I make it while recording. Maybe what I’ll do is send you a video of what is going on. This forum can upload videos. Right?
There is a size limit to attachments so, no, you can’t upload a video to the forum.
I still don’t understand your first sentence. Could you first describe your setup when recording - the connections, whether you’re using Soundflower or Blackhole, how you’re listening (headphones attached to the Mac? speakers connected to the interface?) to what you are recording, and the volume settings everywhere (system output volume, Audacity recording volume and Audacity playback volume). Then the same when you’re playing back the recording.

The set-up is the controller is the center which is connected by an RCA to my portable speaker. Then I have my headphones connected to the controller and the controller is connected by USB to the Mac. I am using Soundflower. So while using Rekordbox I listen to the headphones attached to the controller and then I also listen to the sound coming out of the speaker while I mix. On my Mac’s audio levels I have the volume up to the max for Input and Output. Audacity’s recording level and output volume are at the max.
So while setting things up I figured out the answer to my problem. I swear all I need to do is message you and things work. I use the built in output for the mac input/ ouput instead of sunflower. I can then monitor it with the volume on mute on the mac. Then on playback i just turn the volume on and can hear the playback well. Urggghh.
Now I just have problems with it cutting during the songs while they are playing. Every few seconds the sound will cut out and then come back. Even when I try to play both tracks at the same time it cuts them off the same way. Any ideas?
You’re playing back through the controller? What happens if you play back through the Mac speakers instead?
– Bill
No that is through the speakers on the Mac. The controller doesn’t have audio speakers to play through its just a medium to mix with.
I looked up some things on the Audacity site and wonder if what I am hearing is a dropout. The audio just intermittently drops off and then regains audio after a second or so. The site said it might be the USB cord or things in my computer. Any ideas with that?
When you look at the waveform do you see silent sections? If so that would indicate dropouts during recording.
– Bill
Yeah there is and I saw the post on fixing dropouts so that I believe worked but now I having problems again with getting audio to come up on Audacity. Question. Is there a certain order that when you power on your Mac that you have in plugging in the controller and turning on Audacity and Rekordbox? Because if I have the settings that have worked in the past for my system audio and Audacity audio all the same it works sometimes then other times it doesn’t work. I am so confused. I try so many combo’s that have worked before and it transiently works. Also, I tried using the Apple Music app to play music or use YouTube like I did before to see if it can be monitored and it does but then I cant get my controller/ Rekordbox to work. I don’t want to have to do this everytime I get on to use the programs. Do you know if there is a standard settings for Audacity with my set-up that I can verify I have it all set right. I may try to reset default settings to see if maybe I did one minor thing that has messed it up.
Generally, you should turn on all interfaces before starting Audacity. However, this doesn’t seem to be your problem. Since you are using Soundflower to record the audio from Rekordbox, the interface has nothing to do with it. Double-check your settings in Soundflower, and when you get it to work, write them down.
Have you tried Blackhole? It claims to work on Catalina, and probably works on Big Sur (although I haven’t tried it).
– Bill
I did download it but I kinda gave up on Audacity since I was having so many troubles with it. So you’re saying that my controller’s settings shouldn’t matter as long as audacities settings are correct? I was going back and forth with so many combinations of settings that i was just running around in circles and going mad. Ha ha. I really don’t know what to do. Even Quicktime isn’t doing what I want. I am just going to try to buy that Behringer thing to see if using the output of my controller to link to it and then back to the computer will work. Then I can use the output of it to connect to my speaker and see if I can get it to work then. Do you think that would work?
Using the Behringer interface will get you away from using Soundflower, which may or may not help. It seems a roundabout way of recording. As I understand it, Rekordbox plays audio files that you have on your computer, and sends the audio to your interface, which has an output that is generally meant to drive external speakers.
You had Soundflower working, so I would concentrate on that.

Hello all.
I have a problem with the sound in recordbox. Audiocity records audio, but when I have one channel turned off, I can’t hear any sound in my headphones.
Please help.
