Mono recordings are equally loud on both speakers/headphones if the track pan-slider
is in the middle.
Hm, had not really realised that till… you told me. Because first time I pluged in my new XLR mic to Audacity I heard the output only from one speaker and then I changed the settings to stereo so I could hear it from both speakers, but now I tried again to record in mono and indeed I hear it from both speakers. Have no idea what the problem was first time.
