Inconsistent Playback Volume

I edit voice lines in Audacity, and I’ve found that often when I playback the sound, the volume and intensity can vary from playback to playback. It happens even when I don’t make changes to the audio at all. I have noticed that it will sometimes adjust in proportion to prior sounds played(ie. audio will generally playback quieter if I had just played back a louder sound before it). Is this a problem that can be fixed in Audacity, or are my ears/headphones playing tricks on me?

Windows loudness-equalization is playing ticks on you.
It (and all other audio enhancements) can be switched off by checking a tickbox …
