Recording from Television

I use Audacity since 2005 and always found it to be among the best freeware.
Recently I tried to make recording with Audacity from my Television using a cable with 3,5 mm jacks on both ends.

Plugging in the headphone output of my TV and Microphone input of my Laptop.

I could make a recording but with very bad sound quality.

Perhaps the settings weren’t right.

Could you give some advice on how to proceed correctly ?

A headphone signal is about 100 times stronger than a microphone signal and is compatible with the line-input (blue) on a regular soundcard.

The Behringer UCA202 is a popular and relatively inexpensive audio interface with line-inputs. There are lots of higher-end interfaces, and some cheaper ones. Most won’t have a matching 3.5mm connection so you’ll probably need an adapter cable.

Don’t buy a regular “USB soundcard” because they are like laptops with only mic-in and headphone-out.

You may need to change setting in Windows on your Laptop to tell windows it is Linein.
and set Audacity Audio Settings to Recording Linein device.
