Audacity crash after language selection -Illegal instruction

Post by Cyanaether22 » Sun May 10, 2009 6:57 am

Good day! I'm running Zenwalk Linux on an old dell latitude CPI a366t with 364 MHz and 128 MB ram with 4 GB HD.

I just installed Audacity using netpkg audacity - first error was a Cairo error. so I used netpkg cairo to search and install it, found it, installed it. done!

but now, I start audacity, it shows me the language selector, I pick English, then it quits and the terminal claims "Illegal Instruction".

how do I fix this? and do you know how i can get more detailed information on this illegal instruction? i can't find how audacity logs its errors.
thanks!!

All development on Audacity 1.2.x ended some time ago (release of Audacity 1.4 is due soon)
You would be best to install a more up to date version - the current version is 1.3.7

Sorry - probably posted it in the wrong forum then.

I will check my version, but I installed this with netpkg audacity so I would assume that it's the latest version?

If not, I will shut up and go compile the latest source.

Hey - sorry i posted in the wrong forum.

The version I am using is 1.3.7 for i486. The issue is still happening despite a delete/reinstall.

Any ideas? I will try again to compile the source code, it didn't work before but I don't recall why.

I don't know Zenwalk, so I can't offer much help there, however, as a general point it is important that you have a working sound system before you install Audacity. Make sure that you have a fully working ALSA.

When building from source, ensure that you have the "dev" versions of the dependencies.

ALSA works just fine, and I will check about the dev....

But does anybody know how to find out more info? I've tried audacity -v .... doesn't make a difference lol.

Have a look in your home folder. There should be a hidden file called ".audacity-data"
Have an look in that folder and see if there is a file called "audacity.cfg"
If there is, delete (or rename) it.

The "audacity.cfg" file stores the Audacity Preferences. If that file is corrupt, or has invalid settings, then it can cause all sorts of problems.
The file will be recreated the next time you run Audacity. (The file is not deleted or overwritten when you un-install or re-install Audacity)

I found that folder, but the only thing it had in it was "presets" - another folder which was also empty. ;)

So just to be safe I deleted both folders and tried to launch again. no luck - "Illegal instruction" again.

I'm just looking back over the old posts in this topic - what processor does your computer have? From what I can find on Google, it is from around the time of Pentium II/Pentium III ?
Should you be using 1.3.7 for i486, or for i686?

As far as I know:
i386 = Intel 386
i486 = Intel 486
i586 = Pentium I
i686 = Pentium II, Pentium II Celeron, and above
