Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Did you download it free from the SourceForge web site?

http://audacityteam.org/

If not, you got Something Else. It's not illegal for somebody to be selling Audacity. That's one of the licenses granted by open source software. However, you don't have to pay it if you don't want to.

Yes, when was the last time you updated your virus protection and did a comprehensive scan? I mean the one where you can't use your computer for three hours, not the wimpy one that runs in the background.

What else is running on your machine?

Still, it looks like you are running Something Else (instead or additionally to Audacity).
Check your icon links and file associations if you have the skills.
Possibly, you have a plugin doing this - check locations where Audacity searches for plugins.

Or possibly, download a ZIPed ("no-install") version of Audacity, unzip all of it to an empty directory, and run audacity.exe therein.
[Download e.g. on http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows :
Windows 2000/XP/Vista: Audacity 1.3.7 zip file (6.2 MB) http://audacityteam.org/beta/audacity-w ... -1.3.7.zip If you cannot run the installer because you are in a computer lab or other restricted environment, download and unzip this or the file below instead.
Windows 98/ME: Audacity 1.3.7 zip file (6.2 MB) http://audacityteam.org/beta/audacity-w ... -1.3.7.zip ]

What did help?
