output sound volume

Help for Audacity on macOS.
Forum rules
ImageThis forum is for Audacity on macOS 10.4 and later.
Please state which version of macOS you are using,
and the exact three-section version number of Audacity from "Audacity menu > About Audacity".


Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x are obsolete and no longer supported. If you still have those versions, please upgrade at https://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
The old forums for those versions are now closed, but you can still read the archives of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x forums.

Already answered. You posted the Audio Device Info which I asked for, which lets us see all your audio devices. The audacity.cfg file has much less information of relevance.

I understand you deleted audacity.cfg which would make all your settings default, and the problem continued. We know what the defaults are.

Some news: sound output selection and volume went back to normal after uninstalling Soundflower.

Regarding uploading the .cfg file, a .txt file would not be allowed; I've tried it, see screenshot.

If you need Soundflower you could try reinstalling it. At least you know that uninstalling it again would solve any problems it creates.

As explained previously, don't put quotes round the extension. It works with .txt extension, even on Mac.

What would uninstalling sunflower do?
I don't believe sunflower is the culprit.
Nobody has a rational explanation for what is happening so you may have to think a little outside the box.

Soundflower is a kernel extension so has considerable scope to make system changes. We don't even know which version of Soundflower you have or whether it is appropriate for Snow Leopard. Early versions of Soundflower were very buggy.

Hello Gale,
It's been a long time since my latest post and many things have happened.
1-The Sennheiser USB headphones I’ve sent for repair were sent back to me in a new package; no reason was given but, they must have been malfunctioning.
They sounded fine when I first tried them, sound volume was OK.
Then they stopped sounding well; the sound volume is about 50% or less than the sound volume one gets from the internal speakers using a plugged-in standard headphone.
The only difference from what I’ve written on my first post is, I don’t need to select the output device in Audacity in order to listen through a different device selected in System Prefs.

2-I’ve taken the big step and upgraded to macOS X 10.11.6 El Capitan.
The upgrading has had no effect on the output sound volume when listening through the Sennheiser headphones.
I have twice repeated the procedure you or Cyrano have suggested deleting the .plist in /Library/Preferences/Audio but to no effect.

I’ve written to Sennheiser about a week ago telling them about the persisting problem with their headphones but have not gotten any reply yet.

Can only hope to get more help from you if at all possible.

Sorry but I cannot fix your headphones or make them compatible with Mac. The Apple forums might have some further ideas of things you can try. They may suggest resetting the SMC.

I've posted the issue on the Apple forums but never got a reply.
As to resetting the SMC, this function doesn't address the issue.

Have you tried zapping the pram? Hold down option-command-p-r right after the startup sound to do so...
