I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) and Audacity 1.3.4 (something) and when I edit 1 hour tracks (Church services) it takes for ever to switch between tracks, change channel assignments, or switch between left or right desktops.
this all started when I wanted to get better perform from the 1gig memory machine - instead I'm running the hard drive like crazy between function/switches and Audacity response is poor at best.
Where can I look, I remember clicking a check box about "I've got gobs of memory" at one time and don't know where it is to change it - assuming that's the problem.
thx, dave

Re: Slow Rsponse - 286 MB WAV file
Thanks for the reply Steve I looked on the preferences window but saw nothing about memory except to hold the recording in memory till stopped. I've check that box with no change in memory use or edit response. I can still go get a shower between changes of track.
I my frustration I've rebuilt my Hardy system, installed Studio that took most of Tuesday and after that we were back to the screaming machine. Today we're back to Audacity's window grey-out while the resident memory runs up to almost the full Gig of RAM and back down to 26MiB it does this a couple times before whatever function I've requested is activated.
Like I say post rebuild of Hardy there was no memory ramping and the 1 hour recordings were very responsive to work with - this morning we're back in the grey-world. I need some way to know what it is Audacity is doing while I'm waiting so I can provide a better diagnosis of what's going on under the covers.

"post" rebuild of hardy? Do you mean "pre" rebuild of hardy?dvdntwrk wrote:Like I say post rebuild of Hardy there was no memory ramping and the 1 hour recordings were very responsive to work with - this morning we're back in the grey-world.
When was Audacity nice and responsive and when was is not?
Are you sure that you are comparing like with like? Are all of the settings in Audacity, and settings for your system the same now as they were when it was responsive? (Recording and Playback device settings, Quality settings, Available RAM....?)
Basically I'm asking "what have you changed?"
