Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Editing Questions

Post by sidjackson » Sat Oct 06, 2007 7:48 pm

I have a few questions:

1) The default track gain interval is 3, is there a way to set preferences so that I can get the levels in between?
2) Is there a way to adjust volume within a track without using envelopes?
3) Is there a way to ensure that previously muted tracks don't "unmute" when I open a file?
4) Is it possible to do real-time effects tweaking instead of having to render?
5) Can I create and save virtual tracks? I'm getting frustrated with not being able to undo saved changes

Thanks!

OK, one at a time. I'm sure I'm misunderstanding the problem, but if you select a segment of the performance and Effect, Amplify, the panel will let you change the audio gain in tenth-part dB jumps (-2.6dB, +4.9dB). Not 3. Plus, the one in the effects tool redraws the waveform to show you what you did. The track tool is virtual and you have to keep remembering you applied it.

You can split a stereo track up into two monos and apply tools to each side with the Split Stereo Track tool under the downward-facing black arrow to the left of the track.

In regards to question 1) you can get gain in intervals of one if you hold down the shift button then move the gain slider. This alows you to get change gain from say 3 to two.
Dont know if this helps.

On #5, again maybe I don't understand the question, but if you save a project instead of exporting a clip, that project XML file should let you undo yourself all the way back to the original clips.

Thanks for the help so far....

My understanding was that if I saved the project then the history was reset so that I couldn't go back and undo changes I'd made. If this isn't the case, how do access early changes?

And is there no effects plug-in window possibility? Something where I can tweak knobs, hear how it sounds, without having to add numerical parameters like say, for the plate reverb? I don't know what damping ratio I want numerically, but I do know acoustically.

Thanks again.

<<<history was reset>>>

I believe you. I rarely use projects. If I'm on a complicated show, I export at major points so I won't have to far to go back if I screw up, and I have hard copies, not a collection of XML pointers.

<<<tweak knobs>>>

Some tools have a Preview feature that does that. If yours doesn't, it doesn't. If you wanted to design and code a preview feature, I'm sure the programmers would consider incorporating it into the next Audacity release.
