how to make 1.3.7 the default version if I also have 1.3.8?
I downloaded the 1.3.8 nightly because I wanted to open the .aif files that GarageBand creates. (And it works, which is great.) But now I can't get 1.3.7 set as the default version for other file types (including .aup). I'm trying to do that because, while I want the 1.3 features badly enough to risk the dangers of using a beta, I'm not quite sure I should be using a nightly alpha for important files. I can change a single file to open in 1.3.7 from the file's apple-I info window, but then when I click "Change all", everything goes back to 1.3.8. So I'd welcome either advice on how to change the default version, or reassurance that 1.3.8 isn't really any riskier than 1.3.7 and I needn't worry. But if I can't get either, it's okay; most files I can open from within Audacity, and those that I can't I can always right-click and pick the version I want. Thanks! --Allen

They warn you that it's enormously dangerous to have two of the same release version active on the machine at the same time. They step on each other's preferences and housekeeping. The Nightly Builds are produced for a purpose and that purpose frequently doesn't include solutions to earlier problems. They're not automatically cumulative.
I keep my development system straight by scrubbing all traces of each version and build before I install a new one.
Be sure and mention this if you post a question about an instability.

I've been using 1.3.8 on Linux and it is pretty stable. There are several bug fixes in it that are not in 1.3.7, so although it stilll an alpha it is probably no more risky than 1.3.7. However, there probably are some bugs in it, so with important work you should be extra diligent about making backups. The best backup for a track is a WAV export.

Thanks! I thought I was only supposed to avoid *running* two versions at once. Koz, by "same release version," do you mean all the 1.3.x's are the same release version? And by "not cumulative," do you just mean the nightly builds sometimes break things? And by "all traces," that's just the .app file and the preferences file, right?
Anyway, I just saw at http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... own_Issues that the .aif bug fix has been incorporated into 1.3.7, so it looks like I don't need to worry about 1.3.8 anyway.
