Vocal ISOLATION Tutorial: Step 4 makes no sense

Post by Equalizer » Tue Jul 21, 2015 7:04 pm

Seems to me that Step 3 is just Step 4 rewritten and step 4 should have been deleted ???

Using Audacity for vocal isolation

An Audacity user (Marco Diego) posted this technique on the Audacity Forum for using Audacity to attempt to isolate vocals; it will not work successfully in all cases.

It is sometimes possible to isolate vocals by using Audacity's Noise Removal to capture the noise profile of a song that has had vocals removed, then run Noise Removal with that profile on the original mix before vocals were removed.

Make a copy of your original stereo track
Select the whole track (click in the space its Track Control Panel)
Copy the track with Edit > Copy
Create a new stereo track with Tracks > Add New > Stereo Track
Use Edit > Paste to make a copy of the original track in the new stereo track
Select the whole of the copied track (click in the space its Track Control Panel)
3. Remove the vocals in the copy by using Effect > Vocal Remover (for center-panned vocals)...
4. On a copy of the track remove the vocals as in Case 1 above using Audacity's Vocal Remover

The copied track should remain selected, so use Effect > Noise Removal... and click on the Get Noise Profile button
Now select the original track (click in the space its Track Control Panel)
Use Effect > Noise Removal... and click on the OK button
Delete the copied track (click in the [X] at the top left of its Track Control Panel)

Also, this is a typo:
"Then import the original song into Audacity again and try this Nyquist plug-in elliptice.ny to move the bass frequencies to center. "

The correct filename is ellipticeq.ny. It downloads the correct file, but its confusing to end up with something similar but not the same.

Now, where does this go? Logically it goes in Audacity/Nyquist but that's wrong, it needs to be in the /plug-ins folder to show up.

And it shows up as Effect/Elliptic EQ.

Now, where do I find the INSTRUCTIONS for how to use it to move the bass to center?

Behold. The absolute rock-bottom, least attractive part of producing a software program. Writing the manual. If you do this much more, we're going to invite you to join the team. Be careful what you wish for.

I fully agree.

Peter has already flagged this page as "to do". Mainly because of the new "Vocal Reduction and Isolation" effect.
There's a lot outdated, e.g the name "Vocal Remover (for Center-panned audio)".

In other words, Peter and I would be happy if one takes care of this tutorial...

Cheers
Robert

Thanks, done in the development Manual (so this change will be visible in the next version of the Manual).

The correct filename is ellipticeq.ny.
It is better to link to the released Bass to Center plugin so I made that change. I also added a link to how to install Nyquist plugins.

Here are the instructions for Bass to Center: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Nyqui ... _to_Center.

Having made some improvements to it I set a "P1" to review the page properly. Hopefully you can advise Peter on anything else that needs changing on that page.
