Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Hang when importing aiff file

Post by phiw13 » Fri Jan 30, 2009 2:44 am

Audacity 1.3.7, OS X 10.5.6 Intel.

1. Open new project file
2. File > Import > Audio and navigate to an .aiff file
3. progress dialog comes up, gets stuck at the end.

Actual results: Audacity hangs, requires a force quit.
Expected result: obviously, import that sound file :-).

The same happens with File > Open and try to open an aiff file.

<<<1. Open new project file>>>

Actually, you opened an Audacity Project, which is multiple files.

<<<2. File > Import > Audio and navigate to an .aiff file>>>

Before you do that, open the "aiff" file in QuickTime Player and Apple-I to get the INFO panel. Is it still a normal AIFF file?

16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 44.100 kHz

That's not an AIFF file. That's a WAV file. WAV files have a Little Endian structure, AIFF files have a Big Endian structure. Otherwise they're pretty much identical. If you have the wrong file extension, it will drive Audacity nuts.

Do you have OS-X set to show you file extensions? This may be a good idea here.

Finder > Preferences > Advanced > Show All File Extensions.

Now you can change the filename to Some-Music.wav and I bet it opens right up.

OK.
The file I attempted to import comes straight off a (commercial) Audio CD (78.4Mb file_name.aiff). Importing that into Audacity hangs the app.
I 'converted' this to a wav file (file_name.wav) by changing the extension. Tried to import that in Audacity.
Result: hang, followed by beachball of death. With the same sample as linked to in the first post of this thread.

BTW - The progress dialog box in Audacity see that file as an .aiff file.

Workaround: import in iTunes, convert to AAC and import the result in Audacity (with slight loss of quality, not important in this particular case)

Audacity 1.3.3 was able to import that with no problems.

<<<straight off a (commercial) Audio CD>>>

Good to know that earlier. Those aren't either WAV or AIFF. Those are special CDA format and they have to be ripped to work. I disagree completely with OS-X insisting they're normal AIFF files. They're not, as you found out.

Change the iTunes import preferences to WAV or AIFF 16 bit 44100 Stereo. Anything you open in iTunes will be converted to a "normal" format. This works with all versions of Audacity and any other sound program. Make sure to change iTunes back to the compressed format of your choice or you will hose your iPod.

I didn't know 1.3 would do that directly, but all programs will not.

No intention to flame, but...

I'm experiencing this same bug, and am pretty sure it is not a CD-import issue. WAV files are fine, but NO .aif files will work. My files are big-endian, properly encoded aif files, and I can open them with Audacity 1.3.5 as well as any of the other audio programs that I use, so I don't think it's just a CD-A problem. I've exported .WAV files from quicktime, those open fine. Re-export same files as .AIF and Audacity 1.3.7 will have nothing to do with them.

As I'm teaching a workshop on Audacity tomorrow (perfect timing, no?) this is more than a little irritating knowing that my participants will be coming in with non-functional versions of the software that I'd asked them to download. (and telling everyone simply to work in .WAV is a solution)

I'm on OSX 10.5.6.

Any solution in sight?

Hi,

I'm having the same problem. I had to uninstall 1.3.7 and reinstall 1.3.3 which imported my aiff files just fine. The system I was using was OSX 10.4 (Tiger). I haven't tried it on Leopard.

For the record. I copied a tape recording using Roxio CD Spin Doctor to create the aiff. Audacity 1.3.3 imported this with no problems. Audacity 1.3.7 had the same problem as the OP. The import meter would quickly fill up to about the last 10% of the meter, and then would hang until I force quit.

Cheers,
~g

I'm having the same problem. .aiff that I just opened in 1.3.5 hangs 1.3.7. Leopard 10.5.6. Seems to open .wav, .mp3 and .m4a (after installing ffmpeg) just fine.

Great. Always the one version we didn't try.
