Problems with the new Noise Reduction replacing Noise Remova

On a bright, cheery note. I've used the new Noise Reduction several times now with gentle settings and it appears to work as on the tin with few if any evil artifacts. I haven't needed to rescue projects on death's door, either, but what I've done sounds good.

Actually 12.6.6. We needed a little more aggression than the devil could do. Is it still the case that if you start getting closer to 20, you should probably start addressing other shortcomings in your recording environment? 12 used to leave just barely audible stuff floating in the sound (snake voices). I haven't found any.

It is not. The result is remarkably clean. I understand it's just waiting for me to let my guard down.

That's not to say the tool is "perfect in every way" (Mary Poppins). Why is the Smoothing slider at one end in order to select the "middle" of the range? Where are the markers for the default settings? What happens if you select "0," the obvious center of the Sensitivity range?

"0.00" Sensitivity is the bypass switch - it turns the effect off.

As Paul has already pointed out, The reduction setting can now be much higher.
I've got no problems with e.g. -60 dB.
Once you've found a setting for -6 dB, you'll probably also have the right one for -48 dB.

You will also be glad to know that I've finally been able to upgrade my microphone. I now have the AT 2020. I only set it up today but I've already noticed the absolutely fantastic fact that it does not pick up soft sounds from behind my Auralex Mudguard (i.e. the quiet fans I have which I could never use with the Blue Snowball).

Let me know when and what you would like me to do.

Hm, a more focussed cardioid pickup pattern? I too use the n00b's snowball but I have also heard that AT 2020 beat it for the price range. I make no pretense to expertise in equipment choices.

Oh and FYI, yes I did have remnants from the later version. When I uninstalled again, this time deleted the folder and removed some reg entries, I found a few things slightly slower.

You should never edit the Windows Registry by hand unless you know what you are doing. No Audacity settings that you see in Preferences and elsewhere are stored in the Registry (except for a registry setting that Windows creates which Audacity cannot control).

If you want to reset your Audacity settings, simply enable the box "Reset Preferences" when you install Audacity.

If you are saying some effects or processes are slower in 2.1.0 than previous Audacity versions, please start a new topic and be specific. Thanks for your help.

6 for Frequency smoothing is the maximum, but 0 is the default. Perhaps you could experiment with what smoothing level works best for you. I think there is agreement that 0 is not a good default for smoothing in the new effect.

If you attach a sample for a Noise Reduction problem, the sample should have ambient noise followed by your voice with the noise. Perhaps raw before you start editing is better, and we need WAV not MP3.
