I get no sound on the playback and some how the meters in the top right section next to play, rec, etc have disappeared. The wave form of recorded material is there but no sound out of speakers thanks inadvance

Edit > Preferences > Interface > Meter Toolbar.

While you're there.

Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > Output

Is that setting pointed to where you want the sound to go? If you just plugged in a USB device, some Windows throw all the sound services over to it--sometimes by accident.

I have the same problem. All my meters are showing (and the playback meter says it is playing...), but no sound.

I've already checked to see if my computer was on mute, or if anything else plays back (like just playing a CD in Windows Media Player), and everything checks out fine. I also checked what you mentioned to do for the original poster, and everything looks fine.

Any thoughts?

Wait. This does ring a bell. There's something about the way Vista manages its sound devices. It's not straightforward, either. We've had people with this problem plug in a microphone and have the sound services start working. Vista doesn't just provide sound services and have a happy day. Services and devices have to be explicitly established for each job.

Can you record from a plugged in microphone? I assume this is a laptop. It's always a laptop.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help, got the sound by switching to my sound card and not some other setting and got the meters to come back Best Always sd62851

Hey Koz,

Yeah, it's a laptop. Dell Inspiron 1525. Not the biggest laptop around, but usually more than adequate for what we're doing.

We've been recording our church sermons for the last few months, plugging into the microphone jack through our rather outdated soundboard.

Up until yesterday, things were great!
