How to upgrade Audacity 1.3.13 to 2.0.6

Post by rcavictor » Tue Dec 30, 2014 4:49 am

If I upgrade 1.3.13 to 2.0.6 will the 1.3.13 audio files function with 2.0.6 version?
What are the steps to upgrade?
For future upgrades is there a notification feature for new versions?

Yes, Audacity 2.x is backwardly compatible with 1.3.x projects.
rcavictor wrote:What are the steps to upgrade?
Uninstall the 1.3.13 version first, then install Audacity 2.0.6 using the recommended installer.
Because it is such a big jump from 1.3.13 to 2.0.6 I would recommend that you select the option to "reset preferences" during the installation.

For future 2.x updates you will be able to just install over the top of the previous 2.x version.

You can register your email address at the bottom of the Audacity home page to be notified of new releases: http://audacityteam.org/

As far as basic operational use, is there a big difference between 1.3.13 and 2.0.6 versions?
The reason I ask is because, when I plug in the HDMI cable and add a HDTV to my laptop. (duplicate screen mode)
For some reason the 1.3.13v does not detect audio, once I switch to laptop screen only, 1.3.13v detects audio.
The windows 7 volume mixer shows the audio source but 1.3.13v does not detect it.
It has something to do with switching to duplicate screen mode, using HDMI
Do you think 2.0.6 version would correct this problem.

I don't think so, unless it was a bug in the third-party PortAudio audio interface we use which is now fixed.

Even if not, it would still be much better to upgrade to 2.0.6, which has many bug fixes and new features compared to 1.3.13. Plus, there is no technical support for 1.3 versions any longer.

Do I take it you are trying to record the HDTV? Have you tried both MME and Windows DirectSound host in Device Toolbar?

Have you tried Transport > Rescan Audio Devices in Audacity after switching to duplicate screens? Does using only the HDTV screen give the same problem?

No, Just the audio from the internet.
All I'm doing is sending audio/video signal via HDMI from computer to the HDTV.
When the computer switches to duplicate screen mode.
Audio to Audacity cuts off.
Audio is seen on volume mixer and heard on HDTV
Gale Andrews wrote:Have you tried both MME and Windows DirectSound host in Device Toolbar?
Yes, no change
Gale Andrews wrote:Have you tried Transport > Rescan Audio Devices in Audacity after switching to duplicate screens?
Yes, no change
Gale Andrews wrote:Does using only the HDTV screen give the same problem?
Yes, no change

Audio is seen on the Audacity VU meter until the computer switches to duplicate screen mode when using HDMI cable.
Unpluging HDMI cable from computer restores audio to Audacity VU meter.
Strange?

You may be experiencing part of the HDMI Quality Assurance (copy protection) service. When you watch a movie, it's made to go exclusively up the HDMI cable to the display device and make no stops along the way. Branches and other services are locked out.

However, you may not need that just to record YouTube.

What happens if you play a song in Windows Media Player with the HDMI output as default playback device in Windows Sound? Does the TV get the song audio with a) laptop screen only b) duplicated screens or c) HDTV only?

If possible, can you grab the information from Help > Audio Device Info... top of the Audacity menus for situation a)? Right-click in the Info window, Select All, CTRL + C to copy, press the Code button above the message window here, then paste.

Then close the Info window, change the display to duplicated, Transport > Rescan Audio Devices, open Audio Device Info... and copy/paste that info here. Finally change the display to HDTV only, do another rescan of audio devices then paste another set of info here. Please make clear which set of information is for a), b) and c).

Thanks.

A) laptop screen only --- No audio on HDTV, Audio on Laptop
B) duplicated screens -- Audio on HDTV only
C) HDTV only ------------ Audio on HDTV only

Thanks for all the detail.

So when you have the TV connected to the HDMI output, but you choose to send the display to the laptop only, the HDMI audio output device is not available in Windows (you don't see HDMI audio in the Playback tab in Windows Sound)?

That's what it looks like from your Audio Device Info in situation A).

For B) and C) do you see "Error opening sound device" in Audacity? Or does the playback cursor move?

That is correct, Here is a Screen shot of Windows Sound Playback device window.
The vertical VU meter is not visible to the right of the ATI HDMI Output device.

If I plug in the HDMI cable into the laptop, it looks like this Screen shot.
Once the HDMI interface and HDTV completes their handshake, the vertical VU meter appears to the right of the ATI HDMI Output device.
The laptop display goes black for a second when switching over to HDMI interface and duplicate screen mode.
When plugging in HDMI cable the laptop senses the HDTV communication signal and switches over to HDMI interface and duplicate screen mode automatically.
By pressing f4 I can manually switch display devices.
With the Audacity Output Device drop down, I can switch audio from HDTV speakers to laptop speakers.

Here is a Screen Shot of Windows Sound Recording device window, when HDTV is added.
Audio is only present with laptop display Screen Shot

No,
Audacity Playback through HDMI functions correctly. cursor moves.
Audio is heard from the HDTV speakers.
Only time I see "Error opening sound device" is when I unplug HDMI cable and fail to Rescan Audio Devices. After rescan error is corrected.
I also discovered when using HDMI the laptop Audio-out (headphone) jack is disabled.
My hunch is, the sound card must be blocking audio to windows sound when HDMI is used. At least for this laptop.
What is interesting, the laptop does not have a High definition Blu-ray disc drive. Just DVD
Any Ideas,
Thanks
