Audacity crashes when exporting to mp3 using Lame

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Audacity crashes when exporting to mp3 using Lame

Post by KnoxVol » Thu Jan 15, 2009 3:04 pm

Hello;

The Lame encoder causes Audacity to crash when I try to export an mp3 file. Here is the message that I get:

---
Audacity has caused an error in
LAME_END.DLL
Audacity will now close.
---

I have got both the 1.2.6 version and the 1.3.5 beta version.

I followed the instructions here and the programs both still crash:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... stallation

I have got the Windows Me operating system. It could be because of the old operating system.

Both of the Audacity versions work fine on my computer. It looks like that Lame ought to work but it won't.

If anybody knows what might solve the problem I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Lame needs to be opened in the Programmes file containing Audacity, when you try to export in Mp3 in 1.2 you should get a message asking where Audacity is, I think.

What version of LAME do you have?

Also search your computer to see if there are any other versions of Lame present.

Gentlemen;

Thank you for responding to my problem.

It's the version lame-3.98. I got it from this page:

http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/

Here's what it says at the download link:
..
For Audacity on Windows:
libmp3lame-win-3.98.2.zip
..

Regarding stevethefiddle's question: I did a search and found three more copies of lame_enc.dll on my computer.

I have got two Swish programs (version 2.0 and version 2.01). Each of the Swish programs have a copy of the lame_enc.dll

Also, my Winamp has a copy of the lame_enc.dll

I just now found the other copies of lame. I had no idea that they were there.

It looks like I may have found the problem. I have used all three of the lame_end.dll files that were already on my computer (one from the Swish 2.0, one from the Swish 2.01, and one from the Winamp) and all three work!

The lame_enc.dll from the download page above must not be working right.

There is something I noticed, though. I made a few mp3 files to test the lame_end.dll files that were already on my computer.

The last one or two seconds of the recording plays at the first of the mp3 file. And the last part of the recording is truncated or missing from the mp3 file.

In other words I can count to ten (i.e. one, two, three, four, etc) and the "nine" and "ten" are at the first of the mp3 files instead of at the last.

It sounds like this: "nine ten one two three four five six seven eight"

I don't know if that is a lame_enc.dll problem or not.

Anyway, I seem to be getting closer to having the problem solved.

Ooh how strange

I suspect that is an issue with the media player rather than with the lame encoder, but here is a way to test that out:

Import the MP3 into Audacity - you will see the waveform in the imported track.
Play the track from the begining and you will see the visual representation of the sound in the waveform .

If you still have "nine, ten" at the beginning of the track, then the problem is with the encoded MP3.
