Recording from sound card at wrong speed. 48 vs 44.1 MHz

When recording from "Monitor of" you can see that the cursor is moving too fast across the screen. From 0 to 66 in audacity takes 60 seconds by the pc clock. So audacity catches 60 seconds of sound information but spreads it out over a 66 sec playback. Which is 8.5 % too slow.

But very invoved and I could not understand the outcome.
As discussed, changing audacity sample rate settings from 44.1 to 48 achieves nothing, nor does the Play-at-speed control. All I can do is use the "change speed" in "effects" to increase by 8.5%, but I have to do this with every recording. presumably it's something to do with my 7 year old sound card chipset, which is part of the motherboard. It causes other problems with grapics too. Everything was fine till I went from 12.04 to 14.04.

Is there anything I can do other than change the speed of every individual recording?

Update: I thought the problem was now permanent, but it has cleared itself again for now.

Latest events: Noticed problem returned again yesterday after recording sound from a vevo site embedded in a web page:

Stopped and restarted audacity several times, no change. If recording source switched from "monitor of sound device" to "sound device", i.e. for recording from an external source, audacity records at correct speed, but as soon as switched back to "monitor of", audacity immediately starts recording at wrong speed again, within the same track! It is easy to tell: Just start a new recording track at say, 10:42:30 on the pc clock, and when the pointer hits the 20 sec mark on the track, while still actually recording, quickly look back at the clock, which will either say 10:42:52 (wrong) or 10:42:50 (right).

Restarted pc this morning, still wrong speed, then opened a new audacity window to record the same soound from a different source, (youtube) and noticed it was now recording at correct speed.

Now I can't reproduce the fault!

It is usually possible to "download" from YouTube, which is quicker, easier and may be better quality than recording. There is a choice of Add-Ons for Firefox to enable downloading videos. Audacity should be able to extract the audio stream from the downloaded video automatically using "File > Import > Audio". Note that copyright restrictions may apply to on-line media.

Yes, but other conditions on my pc, like pavc controls, and how I use audacity, like whether I am using two audacity windows together, may be different. That'a all I can say.

What I am asking is, this is a known fault, is there a known solution or what is the best workaround using audacity, with reference to the existing threads I have linked to?
I haven't gone up to 2.0.6 yet, is that likely to improve things or make them worse?

No and No.
It sounds to me like there is a problem with the sound card driver which is fooling PulseAudio, which in turn is sometimes sending the wrong sample rate to Audacity.

what is the best workaround using audacity,

Record with the Project Rate (lower left corner of the main Audacity window) set to 44100.
When the recording is complete - if playback is too slow, open the audio track menu (click on the track name at the top of the info panel on the left end of the track) and change:
"Sample Rate > 44100" to "Sample Rate > 48000".

Well, as it's still intermittent will have to break off discussion. Will try the audio track menu setting in future, thanks for pointing me to that.
These drivers are a problem. Something changed with 14.04 and Graphics aren't right either. Don't know what to do about that. Have posted on ubuntu forums but no one has helped.

It's possible that one driver could be upsetting the other.
If your graphics is NVidia, check to see if you are using the "non-free" drivers from NVidia - usually they work better than the open source drivers.

Sorry to veer off topic but can you help further?
I know that my graphics and sound chipsets are as follows:

Mobo MSI K9VGM-V purchased 2007
Chipset
Northbridge VIA K8M890CE
Southbridge VIA 8237A

and in Ubuntu Settings Details it says:

graphics Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.4, 128 bits)

I think I installed pipelight myself and not sure I need it. There seems to be a connection with wine and when i try to run the Ubuntu tweaks program I get warning message about wine and pipelight running. But that is yet another issue.
From what I have posted, can you say what video drivers I am using and would non free nvidia drives help in this case?
