"Meta-effects"

For want of a better word...

Suppose I apply an effect like a lowpass to a selection. But phase shifts may make undesirable effects at the start and end. So I'd like a lowpass effect with a crossfade interval parameter. Blend the "wet" and "dry" near the boundaries according to a simple formula.

But what applies here applies to other kinds of filters.

So how about some general way to "apply this effect with crossfading" that could apply to any effect?

And not just crossfading, suppose I could mix any effect with the inverse of the original sound so I can hear just the residue...

It seems I could define a number of ways to combine wet and dry signals, quite orthogonal to the effect proper, and combine any one of those with an effect. But there seems nothing better now than to code these combinations directly into effects, sometimes (as with Noise Removal Isolate [ideally if not actually]), or use clumsy workarounds.

Do you see where I am going? I can't be the first with this idea.
