Need help getting set up!

Post by Quibley » Wed Dec 31, 2008 6:12 am

Hi,

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me. I'm completely new at this. All I want is one simple thing, which seems so much more difficult than I had anticipated (isn't that usually the way it is?). What headset microphones work with audacity? I bought a Mircrosoft Lifechat LX-3000 that hooks into my USB port. I got it all set up, did the voice test on my PC, and it worked, but it doesn't work with audacity. Doesn't pick up my voice at all. I already put it on the microphone setting in Audacity. My comp is a laptop, so did I just buy a headset that is incompatible with audacity and a laptop, or are there default settings I need to change in my control panel?

I know it's a simply question, but geez- I have spent hours trying to figure out, and now I want nothing more than to break my laptop - lol. Any help would be so wonderful! I'd love you for it! Thanks so much!

Hi
Switch your laptop on with the mike unplugged, plug in your usb mike when it's fully booted, you should get a recognition tone an a message about new hardware. Open control panel, sounds and audio devices, Clik the voice tab, clik the drop down aroow on voice recording, your usb mike should be shown, clik it and do a voice test. If you still have problems-
Also check Audacity, edit, preferences, audio/io you should see your mike listed. If you are using Vista, search the forum using microphone & Vista as key words.

Well, tried that, and the voice test works in control panel, but under the audacity audio/io preferences, it doesn't even list my mic as a drop down option. It just has "Microsoft sound mapper", and "Realtek HD audio input" in the drop down menu. I did install it and my PC recognizes it, but audacity doesn't. Any more hints, pretty please ? ;-) Thanks!

Hi
If you are using Vista I'm stuck, that's why I suggested a forum search using vista and microphone as key words.

You could also try this, substitute mike for turntable:
Turntable not recognised by operating system
If the USB codec is not recognised in Audacity's Recording Device list in the Audio I/O tab of Preferences, you cannot record from it. Make sure the turntable is plugged into the mains and switched on. If that does not help, close Audacity, switch off and unplug the turntable at the USB connection and at the mains. Plug it back into the USB port, and switch it on. Wait a couple of minutes then completely shut down the computer and restart. When the computer has finished rebooting, open Audacity and see if the USB device is now in the Recording Device list. If the turntable is still not recognised, try using another USB cable, as sometimes a faulty cable can cause this problem. If problems persist, request support from the turntable manufacturer.

Just had another New Year thought, your mike came with software??? uninstall it, re-start your PC, plug in your mike & check in audacity. If it's there now shut down you PC and try again, if it's still there re-install your software & try again, if you can't find the mike now, Audacity doesn't recognise your mike's software, use it without the software.
