Realized I didn't answer this one. The answer is "maybe". Switched converters typically are watts in equals watts out plus a bit burned up in in the active components. How the "bit" splits between a constant amount regardless of load and an amount proportional to the load depends on a ton of variables.

I would expect that however you could have a converter that loaded the phantom power to 24V (7 ma - 170 mw) and provide about 95% of that as 5V @ 32 ma.

I doubt anyone makes these as a "store bought" device. As you observed it would probably have to cost almost as much as a decent normal microphone so there's no market. The only folks that might build one are those who already own most of the bits a pieces and so can put that computer mic to work for a couple of bucks worth of parts and a bit of time to solder them together.

And this is confirmed by responses from the Sweetwater people. No commercial product. This only works if you can solder. Actually, there was one poster who wanted this bad enough that he got screw-terminals from Radio Shack to work. No soldering required. I couldn't find his formula....

Not only do you need to know how to solder, you may well need access to an oscilloscope and know how to use it to debug...

Still that single JFET design could probably be fit on a bit of perf board stuffed into an XLR backshell.

At this point I think we've probably lost robertc1985 (the original poster).

Even if you picked apart two existing cables for input and output...

... There's $21 right there, and we haven't bought any of the rest of the parts yet or figured out how to put it together. There's still no good way to tell which wires you're holding when you get to the screw-together phase.

"Is the red wire the 'ring' connection inside the 1/8" socket?"

I'm not interested in building more. Two of different design was enough.

haha almost, i kind of left without explaining why i need such an adaptor. i do a live radio show online keyword is live and out of my bedroom no less so a good xlr mic would not only cost me more than i can afford but also pick up all the background noise. i need a way to feed myheadset mic into my mixer and that i can do on my own with one mic, but the thing is i am going to have guests coming in on my show in the near future and will need a way to get them into the mixer, through thier logitech headsets as well, so not being able to use audacity for a live show i need a hardware solution. i am sorry i did not make that known earlier.
