Export to where the import came from

Post by mdubin » Fri Apr 18, 2014 4:21 pm

Hi:

I have been using this fantastic software for years and I am constantly finding new features of Audacity which enhance my audio editing experience.

There is just one thing which I find annoying:

When I import audio from a particular folder, I wish Audacity would use this same folder for exporting. Instead, Audacity selects the last folder that I exported from which is usually different. As a result, if I am not careful I could export to the wrong folder and sometimes overwrite a file with the same name.

Is there any way to correct this so the export folder is always the same as the import folder?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

No, it's a common feature request. I'll add your vote for this. It is easy to fix if files are imported using File > Open... or File > Import > Audio... . It's quite time-consuming to fix where files are imported without using those dialogues, such as file manager "Open with", or dragging in. The developers would want to refactor the code to accomplish this properly, which is why it has not been done.

There is a long and detailed discussion of this at http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 20&t=77530 . You can also find an experimental Windows build in that topic made by Edgar Musgrove that would do what you want, though arguably it does not employ what would be the best solution to this problem. Edgar is not an official developer and you would use that build at your own risk.

There is no build I know of like Ed's for other platforms. One of the other difficulties of this is making it work for all supported versions of Windows, Mac and Linux.

Hi Gale:

Thanks for your reply. I always import audio using "Import>Audio" and I export audio using "Export". Like I said, when I click on "Export", the folder is not the same as the "Import>Audio" folder but is instead the last folder I wrote to when using "Export". I understand the difficulty it would be for you and your staff to fix this problem since you want it to work under all circumstances.

I'll just have to be very observant and careful that I export to the correct folder.

Again, thanks.

Writing to an external drive is often less reliable than writing to an internal drive, so I would recommend writing to your normal hard drive, then copying (or moving) the file to the external drive.
Important: If you want to disconnect an external drive after writing to it, be sure to "safely remove" the drive, otherwise the written data may be corrupted.

For transferring files to iTunes, see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Tuto ... _to_iTunes
