I tried this but had problems exporting back to the original wav file. Perhaps this is because it was open and presumably locked by Audacity?

I wonder if there is a way to automate the process of loading a WAV file into an Audacity project , detecting the save project event and then running something to extract the saved file from the project copy and back to the orignal file. Given that the source code is open sourcish, has anyone already done this?

This brings me to another question. Reaper, a low cost DAW package depends upon and external audio editor to handle direct waveform manipulation. Has anyone figured out how to use Audacity to handle this job?

They also do a more advanced version called "FlexiMusic Wave Editor" for $20 (7 Day free trial available), but that may also be too difficult for your needs.

While I understand the general desire to do this, it makes my teeth hurt because if anything evil happens anywhere in the process, you have no show. Literally, the show is a pile of rubble and you're back to unpacking the microphone and shooting the work again.

Thanks, no. I'll double up the files and erase the duplicates or unused work later. Plus, if you're in any kind of a production environment, the producer will guaranteed want to see those pre-edit clips after delivery of the final.

"Hey Koz. do you still have that sound shoot from last month?"

Sure. And the one before that.

I'm in a desktop production environment and as luck has it, I am my own producer. Oh well. Thanks for your help.

Still benefits from good working practices like multiple copies and backups - do you really want to lose days worth of work (as many posters on this forum do). :)

Or would you ever need to go back to the raw capture or a previous known edit point, or branch the edit two make different edited versions etc.?

I will probably end up using either Audacity or Cubase. I have to produce 30 or so demo videos for a software product using Camtasia (screen recorder). Camtasia drops the ball when it comes to audio editing and mixing audio tracks. I was hoping to be able to edit the WAV file Camtasia created directly so I would not have to mess around with re-importing into Camtasia. In fact, Camtasia recommends Audacity as their preferred audio editing solution.
