I want to digitize vinyl albums.
Looking over the info for Audacity, I saw that it can remove constant noise such as hiss, but saw nothing about clicks and pops from scratchy records.
My previously tried software, Soundsaver and Vinyl Studio had settings for this. Does Audacity?

Yes it does - it has Effect > Click Removal

But there are better tools available - I personally use Audacity for everything else but for click removal I use Brian Davis; excellent ClickRepair. It costs a little (C $40 IIRC) but is excellent value for the money - see this sticky forum thread: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=1994

Thanks, I thought I might get an email notification when there was a reply and only found it when I just returned and searched. It sounds good.

I downloaded Audacity and recorded a record album from a phonograph, after reading a lot of the sections. I am seeing that the program is much more than being designed primarily for that, with the capabilities of multitracking etc.
But so far I haven't found anything about splitting the track that contains all the separate songs. With Soundsaver and Vinylstudio you were able to section the entire track into songs. You could also go online and if the album was listed, it would divide and name the songs automaticaly. Does not. Does not Audacity do this?
Also vinylstudio had a setting to record and stop when the needle dropped and came off the record. Is the automatic record the equivalent?

It also has a steep learning curve so you need to be prepared to put effort into it to get top results. It also requires Java which many "computer experts" regard as dangerous, for example: http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/09 ... perts-say/ .

See http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Other ... estoration for other possible click repair solutions.

Audacity can do that, but not while recording. Please see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/sp ... racks.html .

No. Audacity is not specialised software designed explicitly for recording albums. Why have you stopped using those other programs you mention?

You could use Transport > Sound Activated Recording for that, but you may need to play with the threshold level. Also if you use that you could cut off the space between tracks more than you intend. It may be OK for pop songs, not for classical genres that have quiet music.

I had gotten a free copy of Sound saver when I bought the USB Phone Plus to record my albums. I recorded maybe 50, spending much time tweaking the sound and getting rid of clicks, pops, noise etc. Then when I went to my DAW editing software to loop a part of a song and play along with it, I wondered why there was only a single track.
I discovered, that though it appeared at the time of recording that there were 2 tracks, in fact everything I had done was recorded in mono. I tried to contact Soundsaver for help and found unfortunately that there was some kind of disagreement or something by the partners and they dissolved the company. I couldn't find any help.
Then I found an article about converting records and Vinylstudio was recommended. I downloaded a free one of this and liked the needle drop and some other functions, but it wasn't as intuitive as Soundsaver and I think it lacked some other features that I liked. But importantly it made mention of a setting to change in the internal audio device setting to change from mono to stereo. After I made the changes with soundsaver then I found out it souoldn't save them unless you bought the license. I was undecided.

I went back to Soundsaver and made the same setting and recorded and album and then when I went to the playback, the program crashed. It seemed if I did in in mono, it wouold playback, but in stereo, it would crash. Then it wouldn't work at all. this seemed the best program, and if there was a fuller version than the copy that came with the preamp, I would have bought it, but no more company , nor help.

So before deciding to go with Vinylstudio, I read about Audacity and decided to investigate that before making up my mind.

Years before, I had a product called Clean! that did the same type of thing and I recorded a lot of albums and they were in stereo, but when I resumed again this was also defunct.

It seems that a combination of these programs would be ideal, plus the declicker mentioned, so I will need to figure out what route to take.
