Automatic sampling rate conversion lost in 2.04

Post by flw » Mon Sep 30, 2013 4:36 am

I delighted in the automatic sampling rate conversion in Audacity 2.03 - it meant if I opened the project with a file in 44.1 MHz and pulled in a file at 48 MHz, the file at 48 would automatically convert to 44.1 and play at the proper speed if I pulled it into a 44.1 track. Now, we're back to the situation where the audio sample with the larger sampling rate simply plays slower in the other track and sounds like mud. If I'd known this feature would be lost, I would have stayed with 2.03. I don't see any other way to convert sampling rate in Audacity - so that means I have to go through another program to convert - bummer! Please bring the automatic conversion back.

I set my Audacity Preferences for 44100 and made a tone. Then I imported another tone that I made at 48000. The project sample rate of 44100 stays constant (lower left of the Audacity Window) and both tones play correctly. That's not what happens to you? If I only import the 48000 file, then the project switches to 48000 and it still plays correctly.

No, I opened a project with a 44.1 file and then pulled in a file at 48. On its own track, it showed in the box at the left that it was 48, and then when I pulled it onto the 44.1 track, it played at 44.1 and sounded veeerrrry slooow. After that I looked at the default setting, and it showed me 44.1.

Actually, I tried it again just now, and this time when I put the sound at 48 onto the 44.1 track, the sound from the 48 track did not play at all. Those are both experiences I remember having with earlier versions of Audacity.

That was indeed a limitation of the 1.2.x series, but I can't reproduce it in Audacity 2.0.4.
What operating system are you using?
Did you download Audacity 2.0.4 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/
Look in "Help > About Audacity". What is the full version description?
Also in "About Audacity", go to the "Build Information" tab: What does it say in the "Core Libraries" section?

I was using Audacity 2.03 on Windows XP, and then I installed Audacity 2.04 over it. I downloaded it from Sourceforge.
But, yikes, I just followed your advice to check under Help/About Audacity for the version, and Surprise! It's showing me Audacity 1.3.14 Beta! I don't know how that took over, but at least I know what the problem is. Thanks for that suggestion. Maybe I should uninstall Audacity and then re-install the 2.04.

Probably a good idea.
And since you have old versions floating around, do a thorough check that Audacity has been completely removed, then (re-)download 2.0.4 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/windows
Download the first file (Audacity 2.0.4 installer) and save it to your computer,
When it is downloaded, run the installer (you will probably need to run it with administrative privileges), and watch for an option to "reset preferences". Select the "Reset Preferences" option, then you will need to confirm resetting preferences the first time that you run Audacity. This will ensure that you are starting with a clean slate :-)

If you never quit 1.3.14, then starting 2.0.4 or any 2.0.x version would just open a new project window in 1.3.14.
