Thanks KeyserS.

Not long - in fact, as you are clearly not a spammer I've manually unlocked your account so your posts should appear immediately.

Judging by some other posts, it seems v2.0.4 doesn't like when there are several audio devices.
I've completly forgotten about the ATI audio abilities which are used by HDMI audio.

FYI foobar2000 gives me the choice between "KS Realtek HD Audio output" and "KS ATI HD Audio rear output", among DS outputs, but if I select the latter I'm getting this error message:

Code: Select all

Unrecoverable playback error: KS output error: error opening device
But since it's used by HDMI I wonder if KS does make sense in this case.

So if you go to Windows Sounds and Audio Devices is the ATI HD Audio rear output a separate playback device? If so and you disabled or uninstalled it (probably you'd have to do it in Device Manager) then 2.0.4 might launch.

Yes, it is.

Sorry but it's the HDMI device driver so I'm obviously not going to remove it. It's up to Audacity to deal with it instead.

It's up to you of course, but I understood you might not be using that HDMI output.

The ultimate answer hopefully won't be to remove WDM-KS, but step over it gracefully if it doesn't work for some device. WDM-KS might even work fine with your standard input for all we know. The point of putting it in 2.0.4 was that it allows you to record with extremely low latencies (similar to those of ASIO, which we cannot ship for licensing reasons).

The question remains: does using KS on HDMI make sense ? Is it even possible ?

I have googled a bit about that and it's unclear.

The device drivers of that HDMI device have apparently determined that KS does make sense, but neither Audacity or Foobar2000 can use HDMI with that kernel streaming. That is not Audacity's or Foobar2000's fault (it is Audacity's fault that it won't launch with HDMI kernel streaming).

Have you tried updating drivers for that ATI HDMI device?

Kernel streaming is valid with S/PDIF so in principle I think it ought to work with HDMI. Whether your HDMI interface is too modern for the WDM/KS interface, or vice-versa, or the problem lies in your ATI drivers, only you can figure out.

Frankly it would be nice to have a maintenance release, Audacity should run showing an error message but not to hang like this.
Can we expect it ?

I think the instructions on http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 46&t=74470 are clear. You can use the posted 2.0.5-alpha as a 2.0.4 "maintenance release".

Would you like to help us test solutions as we develop them?
