Playback Distrortion

Post by TIFF RAYNER » Mon Nov 24, 2008 5:47 am

I am trying to record a half hour radio program. Audio is perfect (Voice and Music) for about 9 / 10 minutes on playback then light gravel starts and quickly builds up into unusable distortion. Same thing happens with Soundtrack Pro. What am I doing wrong ?

<<<9 / 10 minutes on playback >>>

So if you start playing from the middle of the show, it's clean for another nine or ten minutes?

<<<I am trying to record a half hour radio program. >>>

How? From what? Pretend you're trying to explain to me how to capture the same show on my Mac.

No the distortion runs on for the whole recording. It is impossible to detect it in the recording and you cannot notice any change in the wave form. I am recording from a studio type set up as if broadcasting direct to air. I am not constructing the track from 'bits and pieces' it is just a non stop half hour program.

So you're doing what I do, get a stereo AUX feed from the big studio mixing desk and plug it into the side of the Mac with Audacity running as a straight record from Line-In. Piece of cake. Do it once a week for an hour.

Since the waveforms don't change very much, have you tried to play the Exported WAV file on another machine?

To check out the other direction, get a simple 1/8" stereo cable and plug your iPod into the side of your mac and record for fifteen minutes. I bet it works.

No, from the start of the recording. Its not always the same time into the recording and on occasion it does not occur.
I am recording from a studio type set up, Mike, Cd and Dat tape inputs to the mixer then into a G5 Mac with 4.5gb ram.
Audacity tells me that I have 162 hours of recording time left, so no shortage of space there. The fact that the problem occurs on Soundtrack Pro as well as Audacity is a mystery.

<<<inputs to the mixer then into a G5 Mac>>>

The mixer? I'm still holding my Visa credit card wondering what to buy so my setup is the same as yours. Lot of mixers out there and they connect differently and have different problems. Rupert-Neve? FireWire, right?
