Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Broken sound output settings on Audacity launch

Post by robmonk » Fri Nov 21, 2008 4:20 pm

I launched an old copy of Audacity (1.2.4) looking for a program that can convert audio file formats. Unfortunately, not only is Audacity not that program, but it broke my system sound settings, re-routing system audio through my Mac Mini built-in speakers, rather than my M-Audio Firewire Audiophile > to > stereo system setup, which has been working for 2 years.

I have checked the input and output settings in Audacity audio i/o preferences and left them set them to playback through my Firewire Audiophile.

I have checked the device settings in the Mac OSX system sound settings, and they are correctly set to use my Firewire Audiophile for output.

What setting did Audacity break when I opened and then closed it the first time?

You may be looking a little too intently at Audacity. Close everything. Restart the machine with the FireWire device unplugged and turned off. Plug the FireWire back in and turn it on--let it regotiate. Launch Apple > System Preferences and make sure the right audio output device is selected. Launch iTunes. Does that play through your FireWire device? How about FireFox and QuickTime Player? Do they all work OK?

You should be back to normal, and no, Audacity isn't the first program that comes to mind for format conversions. QuickTime Pro would be a good start. That should turn just about anything into an AIFF or WAV file, both of which will open perfectly in Audacity.

Thanks.

I will try that -- after I complete all the business open on my desktop!

I do hope that programmers will take a look at the glitch, though, since disconnected cables and restarting is not something you want to do every day, or even more than once a month -- or EVER!

iTunes continues to playback through the external hardware, but safari audio output through my external hardware broke instantly when I opened Audacity, and hasn't recovered.

I'll try the restart and cable regotiate and complain more if that doesn't work ;-)
