I can't seem to find a simple command for putting marks in a file to simplify cues for playback. Is there a quick way to do this?

Re: inserting marks in a file for ease of playback
Placing a label at the current cursor position - use CTRL+B
Or to mark the current position while playing or recording use CTRL+M
This will create labels in a label track - afterwards you can jump from label to label with the tab key.
(Note that labels are also used to break recordings into tracks - the label mname is used as a filename/trackname.)
