HELP! Any beta ver crashes on launch but 1.25 works fine

Ver 1.25 works perfectly. Every Beta since then gives me this on launch after asking me to choose the language, and then crashes and never starts: Any ideas? Intl MacPro osX.5

So you're complaining that the unstable version of Audacity is unstable? Just wondering.

There are some very entertaining problems with 1.3.6, but I think I'm running 1.3.5 on my Intel machine (although under Tiger, not Leopard) and everything seems to be OK.

It tries to write to the kernel.........um.........

Nothing should ever try to do that except an official Patch from Apple...or a sound driver? What sound equipment do you have connected to your machine and can you try again with it all disconnected?

Do you have multiple users and/or classes of user on your machine? Do you have lots of room on your hard drive?

Yes I have tons of room and only one login acct and again if I install 1.25, it works perfectly, but any of the 1.3x betas just crash as soon as I start the program after it initially asks for the language choice. I've tried deleting all traces of audacity and trying again and no go, yet as soon as I put the 1.25 version back, all works normally. I know it's beta, but there must be something causing this to not even load once. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening and why this is so different than starting 1.25?

I have a mac pro with Komplett Live external sound. That shouldn't make any difference I would think. There must be something different in the way this 1.3x beta series is loading the program.

So you disconnected all that and uninstalled the drivers and what happened? 1.3 started running?

Audacity is a very simple sound program and it sometimes objects to running in a system it doesn't entirely understand.

It's simple. 1.25 works perfectly and 1.3x versions crash as soon as you start them and the select language screen comes on. I would really like to be able to use the most recent version so I would like to figure this out. I don't get the conflict. I'm stumped.

So would I, but I'm out of ideas.

Did you find the Audacity Preference file? I think on most machines now it's audacity.cfg. People tend to leave that file alone when they "start over" and are stunned when the shiny new Audacity has exactly the same preferences and problems the old one did.

On my machine, it's...

HardDrive > Users > Koz > Library > audacity > audacity.cfg

Trashing that file will send Audacity back to First Birthday on the next launch.

Unfortunately, it's only driving you nuts. If it was driving two or three thousand people nuts, it would bubble up to the top of the attention pile--like that Noise Reduction in 1.3.6 thing. Everybody has that problem.

Even if a developer were to show up, they are most likely to tell you to reduce your machine to the state it was in when it came out of the box. No external sound devices and no foreign drivers. You do that if trashing your .cfg file fails.

Well, thanks for the help. I guess I'll try a different program like amadeus pro, as Audacity seems to be the only one that I have problems with, so not to reinvent the wheel just to use that one and I get that it is free and all, but oh well. . . . . .
