Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

1.3.6 won't close

Post by gpseymour » Fri Nov 07, 2008 4:09 pm

I'm running 1.3.6 in Vista Home on a Dell Vostro notebook, and it won't close. If I ALT+F4, click the "X", or select "close" from the right-click menu on the Taskbar, it appears to close and immediately (so fast, it's merely a blink) re-open. Same result ending the application from Task Manager. Only End Process (within Task Manager) seems to work. Actually, I just checked, and since installing 1.3.6, I now have the same problem with 1.2.6 (stable).

Again, no error messages associated with the problem. It _seems_ to comply by closing, then immediately (and obligingly) re-opens itself. No problems I've noticed with any apps besides Audacity, and this _appears_ to coincide with installation of 1.3.6.

Any ideas?

I don't think the application is actually closing and opening back up again. I think whatever error you have is causing a Windows screen redraw. Normally, it would redraw the screen with Audacity missing, but since the Audacity task doesn't close, it just flickers.

Did you install Audacity as Administrator and then run it as a user?

Darned good question, Koz. I'm about 90% sure I installed as admin. I've tried running both as user and as admin. When I get a chance, I'll try re-installing, to be certain it's installed as admin.

I think it's much more likely that you have in 1.3.6 accidentally unchecked "Closing last window quits Audacity" on the Interface tab of Preferences (at the bottom of the Edit menu). Unchecking this will clear Audacity to a new, empty project window when you ALT + F4, click the [X] top right, or File > Close. To exit Audacity, use File > Exit.

1.2 Preferences are separate from 1.3 Preferences so should not be affected, but you can check in the same tab of 1.2.6 Preferences (the actual wording there is "Quit Audacity upon closing last window"). If either Audacity version won't comply, reset their Preferences.

If it does not work after that, please let us know. Many would argue it to be more Windows compliant if ALT + F4 and [X] acted as "exit" when this preference is unchecked, but that's how it is at present.

Brilliant. It's always the simple, stupid mistake, isn't it?

Thanks, Gale!
