New user needs help

This forum is for Audacity on macOS 10.4 and later.
Please state which version of macOS you are using,
and the exact three-section version number of Audacity from "Audacity menu > About Audacity".
Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x are obsolete and no longer supported. If you still have those versions, please upgrade at https://www.audacityteam.org/download/.
The old forums for those versions are now closed, but you can still read the archives of the 1.2.x and 1.3.x forums.

New user needs help
Directions are not real clear. How do I record from a tape to my mac computer? I have the USB cable plugged in and into the cassette capture. NOW WHAT?

Close and restart Audacity.
Click on the Microphone drop-down (input) and see if there's a listing for "USB Sound Device" or something similar. Select it. Play a tape and start Audacity recording. You should see the red recording meters bounce (but you may not hear anything).
Stop the player.
Audacity > Preferences > Recording > [X] Software Playthrough (select) > OK
That should let you hear the show.

I still am confused with this, is it the microphone shown on the toolbar of the computer?
