i've now figured out a way to get audacity running the way i'd like it to, but am still curious how, should there be future update problems, one can un-install audacity when it hasn't been installed from synaptic.
thanks/

If you install using "checkinstall" instead of just "install", then you can remove it using Synaptic.
You need to have "checkinstall" installed on your computer in order to use it - also see the checkinstall website for important information about what could go wrong.

hi
thanks for your answer, but it seems checkinstall isn't something for debian/ubuntu--at least not from what i can tell at the checkinstall home page.

Checkinstall is available for Ubuntu through Synaptic.

The reason that I mentioned looking at the Checkinstall website was because the last time I looked there was a reported bug that I think said could sometimes make the root directory of your computer inaccessible. If this happened, you would need to boot from a CD and change the permissions for the root directory to make it readable. I can't remember exactly what the issue was, but it was potentially serious, and necessary to be aware of in case you were unlucky enough to have the problem.

I've looked again at the Checkinstall website and the warning has now been taken down, so I presume that the bug has been fixed. I have never had the problem with Checkinstall, but I was mentioning it "just in case".

BTW, I have just installed Audacity 1.3.6 using checkinstall, and it worked fine.
