Problems with Realtek hda

I'm having problems with audacity on a new set-up:

Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A8V-VM SE Rev 1.xx
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 0201 11/20/2006

Realtek High Definition Audio

When you launch audacity only

line volume
mic volume
cd volume

are available

There's no stereo mix.

I've downloaded the latest drivers from Realtek and via cp have set Realtek HD audio input and output.

All sounds audible through speakers but no recording possible (all flatlining)


Any useful ideas welcome

The input options that are available to you are entirely dependent on your Sondcard and its drivers - youv'e already updated the drivers so it looks as though you may be stuck.

You may need to consider an external soundcard (two that get recommended on this forum a lot ar the Behringer and the Edirol).

I've had a frustrating search all over the internet for a solution and despite finding some useful general information out (and trying out the latest beta version of Audacity which seemed at first a promising avenue) I still couldn't record.

If you want to record the sound you can hear through the speakers with Audacity (or even the XP sound recorder) the best advice seems to be avoid mobos that use Realtek HDA.

I wish i'd read that two days ago! I've just had to buy a new mobo - I got the cheapest one I could and sadly it has realtek hd sound .... arrgggghhhh ... I'm having exactly the same issue as you. It's a catastrophe. A total disaster.

Don't know if this helps. I too bought a Giga-Byte Mobo with Realtek. Liked the idea of 7.1. But then I could not use Audacity (which by the way is great thanks team), gutted.

However I found that by loading the Realtek drivers and software, using the Realtek control panel, under Mixer Tab, I selected "Realtek HDA Primary Input" and "Realtek HD Audio output". Then went to Audacity and set preferences to Audio I/O = "Recoding" to "MME: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input" it works great!!!

Not only that, but you can use the Realtek "Playback Volume" control to get the exact input level required.

I've got driver 5.10.0.5480


But under mixer the only option is Realtek Audio HD Input... There's no Realtek HDA Primary Input. What Realtek driver are you using please?

I have this exact same problem...except I'm running Audacity on Linux (Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy) and my audio device shows up as HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer). I've tried changing my output/input under Preferences in Audacity to every option listed, and I can't seem to find a device that'll let me record. Anybody have any ideas or an Ubuntu version of obone's solution?

It would probably have been better to post your question on one of the Linux boards - but anyway...

Install ALSA and ALSA mixer (if not installed already), then select "ALSA default" for both playback and recording devices.

If you look in the Linux/GNU pages you will see quite a few posts about this.

I am also having the problem of recording a flatline.
If I understand Obone, it looks as though I need to update my real tek software and drivers?
I have tried all of the other suggetions from help, faqs, etc.

Bob, I believe I can help you and I hope you are still around this area and read this.

1. Open your RealTek control panel and click on the Mixer tab.

2. Go down to the Realtek HD Audio Input section and uncheck Stereo Mix. You want to unmute it. That is your problem, Stereo Mix is most likely muted.

3. Over on the left of the same section, the Realtek HD Audio Input section, you should see a volume knob. Make sure this is turned down real low, but not all the way off.

4. Leave Audacity exactly as it is if you like, with the Microsoft Sound Mapper and I/0 or change it to Realtek, it doesn't matter.

5. Try to record something and and adjust the sound knob under RealTek HD Audio Input on your RealTek control panel to achieve your desired recording level within Audacity. If you turn it up just a little bit over 0, it will blow your recording out of frame and distort it.

P.S.- On a totally unrelated note, under the Sound Effect tab on the Realtek control panel, I turn the equalizer completely off and set environment to None. I modify each program I use to sound the way I wish for it too, I don't want a master control equalizer that affects every sound on my computer.
