Hi Steve. Thanks for the help. It doesn't make much difference up to 150 but definitely worse from 200. Here's a clip from the first time I used Audacity on this new laptop. It has't got any hum. All I can remember doing is adjusting the volume levels. Also, I can't find the generic mic anymore - any idea how I can restore it or won't it make any difference (am using array at the moment).

reading your last post - just to clarify, when I say microphone array, this is the setting I'm using for my external microphone plugged into the usb port.

thanks for your help. Since posting this problem, my laptop was sent back to the manufacturers and has had most of its insides replaced!!! So it was the computer all along.
