Listening to what Audacity is hearing, when not recording.

I got an audio recorder plugged in to the Mac and playing, and I got it set up so that when it's recording, I can also hear the audio. But when it's not recording, I hear nothing. Software Playthrough is marked. When I also have Overdub and Hardware Playthrough marked, it's the same.

How do you get it so that when it's not recording, you can hear what's playing in to the computer, so you can hear the audio when it's both recording, and not recording?

Software Playthrough is the only one needed unless your are doing fancy audio production and overdubbing. Turn Hardware and Overdub off.

When everything is set up to record, click once inside the red recording meters and the speakers and meters will wake up and let you set levels and listen to the work without actually pressing record.
