Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

Creating Keyboard Shortcuts - Can't Find XML File

Post by truthmechanic » Sun Oct 19, 2008 11:42 am

I'm using Audacity 1.2.6 on Mac running OS 10.5.5. I would like to know whether keyboard shortcuts can trigger installed plugins (e.g. LADSPA). Furthermore, I can't seem to find Audacity-keys.xml. The Audacity 1.2 manual says it should be installed in the same directory as Audacity, but Finder won't find a file with that name anywhere.

Thanks very much for your help. I have been using a set of shortcuts in Peak for years and would like to map them to Audacity's commands.

No they can't. The user can install whatever third party plug-ins that they want and Audacity would not know what parameters the plug-in needs.

Thanks Steve. Let me refine my question just to make sure. Can keyboard shortcuts trigger a plug-in menu item, such as "Amplify...." or one of the LADSPA Plugins? I don't need keyboard shortcuts to trigger the actual parameters of the plugins; I just want to bring up the window.

I still can't find that XML file where I could add an entry to test this, either.

If you look in "Edit > Preferences > Keyboard", you will see a list of all available commands that can have keyboard short-cuts.

I don't think that current versions of Audacity include an Audacity-keys.xml file by default.
To create that file, open the keyboard short-cuts in Preferences (Edit > Preferences > Keyboard) and click on "Save". That will create the xml file.

If you manually edit the XML file and want to use it, you must first "Load" it into the keyboard preferences.

It may be worth checking this page for how to reset Audacity preferences just in case you make a mistake or run into problems:

Update: I determined that most menu items except submenu items can be assigned a shortcut via OSX System Preferences, specifically the Keyboard & Mouse preferences pane. The link below shows a general explanation of the process, but the real trick is to click the "+" sign, choose Audacity, and type in the exact name of the menu item you wish to assign a shortcut to.
