Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Vista SP1 & What U Hear

Post by speechless » Mon Oct 13, 2008 9:05 pm

Since installing SP1 (Service Pack 1) for Windows Vista I have been unable to use Audacity to record via “What U Hear” and get an error message urging me to check my input device , etc. “What U Hear (SB Audigy)” is still listed and selected in the Audacity Preference Audio I/O Recording Device drop-down list and is also listed as “working” in the Windows Sound, Recording tab. It was working perfectly before installing SP1. I would be grateful for any advice about the possible cause of this problem and a solution!

Check out the thread that is titled "Error Opening Sound Device". Is this an accurate description of what you have experienced? I wonder, because I installed SP1 around that same time also and I wonder if there is some sort of conflict.

Yes ... same problem and error message. Audacity had been working fine for many many months until I installed Vista SP1. I too have worked through all the usual configuration stuff with no success. I've now reverted my computer to its pre-SP1 install state and Audacity is has returned to normal working. Is SP1 worth the bother?! I suspect that my Creative SB Audigy driver may have been updated during the SP1 install process. Now using version 5.12.1.2000 dated 21/12/2006 but before rolling back to pre-SP1 I forgot to check this so I can't compare.

Wow! I'm so happy. It is working again. Speechless gave me the concern about SP1 so I did a search on SP! in all threads and came up with a thread titled "Why Won't it Work??!!", which was a familiar refrain here. Anyway, here is the answer that put my system back into operation.

It's importent that Vista and Audacity agrees on sample rate and bit depth. SP1 for Vista installation chances thise settings on the recording driver - just another Microsoft feature ;-)

Go to the control panel, sound, recording tab and click properties on your recording device (eg. USB Audio CODEC). Click the Advanced tab and ensure the Default Format maches the setting in Audacity (Edit/Preferences/Quality/Default Sample Rate).

I checked and sure enough, my recording device preferences had been changed to 1 channel instead of 2. I made the change back and I am happily recording again.

I will post this on my thread too for others to check out.
