Latency and overdubbing!

Post by agoldin » Sat Aug 11, 2012 2:41 pm

I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Audacity 2.0.1. I just upgraded the other day. I was using Audacity 1.2.5 for quite a while and everything was fine but alot of info online referred to the new version so I figured I'd better upgrade. Now I can't seem to overdub; I did the Latency Test and set a new value and it seems to have no effect. Strangely enough, I went back to v1.2.5 and there are NO latency settings in Preferences. I did the same Latency Test with the old version, and the two tracks were almost perfectly in sync! With the new version, NOTHING is in sync! This is progress?

That's unusual. Go back into latency settings and pick an arbitrary absurd number and see if it follows you.

Restart Audacity between the setting and testing and see if the new value "stuck."

And we are talking about Recording Latency, right? The ability to overlay the new track directly over the old one. Not machine latency -- the inability to hear yourself in real time.

Actually I tried that already. The number I input "stuck" but still seemed to have no effect, even though the little arrows appeared, to indicate latency correction was applied. The recording is not in sync, and neither is my ability to hear myself in real time. I've gone back to using the old version, 1.2.5, to record. Maybe when I've laid down all the tracks, I'll bring it into the new version in order to use some new effects plug-ins? Glad I didn't trash the old one...
