Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

Mac 0S X 10.3 and earlier are no longer supported but you can download legacy versions of Audacity for those systems HERE.

"file not well formed in line 6" error?

Post by zen_city » Mon Oct 06, 2008 3:15 pm

Hi all--

I have a 2GHz Macbook Pro running osx 10.4.11. I am importing mp4's into my audacity files and then recording additional tracks from an electric guitar through a Korg Pandora 5 effects box that connects to the Mac via usb. I have my "sound out" going through the Korg box to some external speakers as monitors. Korg allows me to be recording and outputting to speakers at the same time if I am reading the directions right. Sometimes it works fine. but very often audacity crashes or seems to save fine but then won't reopen the file. I get the message above "file not well formed in line " or sometimes "line 8" or the message "audacity cannot recover files" During the recording process I can usually tape several tracks, mute various ones to listen to combinations, etc. and all appears to be going well. In some instances I have then been able to export the file as and mp3 that seems okay. So things seem fine until a crash when the program just closes or until I find that a file has not actually saved properly. I am saving at 22000 using mono audio tracks for the guitar parts to keep the file sizes reasonable. I have latency set at -18. I have been warned not to move project around so recordings are saved to a project file set up in my audacity folder.

Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

"Not well formed at line x" usually arises if you use Audacity 1.2.x on Mac but enter foreign/accented characters in labels or track names. You are using 1.3.5d correct? And the recording is OK normally but the crashes are when editing, or you can't reopen the saved project?

You can open the .aup project file in a text editor and see if you can identify a problem, or copy and paste here the lines in the .aup file that are flagged in the error.

I've come up against this error and cannot solve it. Would REALLY appreciate some help ASAP - have lost a big file needed for tomorrow.

Which line is Line 6 when opened in text editor?

The 6th line has no foreign characters. The text editor view is as follows.

Still having problems with a line 6 'well formed' issue
Have changed items from caps lock to no avail.
The only other potential foreign characters in the text are two apostrophes within track names. Even after changing these there is no change.

Here's what I've currently got as my code

<?xml version="1.0" standalone="no" ?>
<!DOCTYPE project PUBLIC "-//audacityproject-1.3.0//DTD//EN" "http://audacityteam.org/xml/audacityproject-1.3.0.dtd" >
<project xmlns="http://audacityteam.org/xml/" projname="Balloonatic 9 Street_data" version="1.3.0" audacityversion="1.3.5d" sel0="325.2826589849" sel1="328.8021550871" vpos="0" h="563.4803503126" zoom="5.5405658747" rate="44100">
<tags>
<tag name="id3v2" value="1"/>
<tag name="Artist" value="Baha Men"/>
<tag name="Full Name" value="Who Let the Dogs Out"/>
<tag name="Album" value="Who Let the Dogs Out"/>
</tags>
<wavetrack name="Audio Track" channel="0" linked="1" offset="0.00000000" rate="44100" gain="1" pan="0">
<waveclip offset="0.00000000">
<sequence maxsamples="262144" sampleformat="262159" numsamples="16593567">
<waveblock start="0">
<simpleblockfile filename="e000080b.au" len="169375" min="-0.731523" max="0.524679" rms="0.135067"/>
</waveblock>
<waveblock start="169375">
<simpleblockfile filename="e0000872.au" len="169376" min="-0.619677" max="0.498019" rms="0.099879"/>
</waveblock>
<waveblock start="338751">
<simpleblockfile filename="e0000ccd.au" len="262144" min="-0.812689" max="0.721321"

The apostrophes were here
<wavetrack name="04 Can't Get You Out of My Head 1"

Having tried to run versions with the apostrophes removed, and with them represented as above, I'm still getting an error in line 6 message.

Any more ideas?

Will be extremely grateful for help!!

S....

6 <tag name="ARTIST" value="Baha Men"/>

Note "Baha Men"

"Baha Men"

At the end of line 6
This looks like the invalid character:

between the "n" of "Men" and the quotation mark.

I can't tell how it appears on your computer - perhaps as a question mark.

I've tried changing that to lower case and to a numerical value but to no difference.

After saving and trying to run again - i keep getting an error in the same line...??
