install audaity problem with xp

Post by tfedores » Sat Apr 14, 2012 9:52 pm

Downloaded the exe file from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows, and installed when click finish received message application failed because the app configuration is incorrect.
Any ideas what is wrong this is the 2.x version.
I installed audacity years ago and it may have been the earlier version but had to reformat my computer and reinstall xp home so now just tried to download audacity and install and received the above message. I tried reinstalling it and got the same message.
Thanks

Please see the following instructions for installing the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package:

Thanks for the help. I only have service pack1 installed on my system which makes it a 32bit and a 64bit system. I will try your advise and see what happens.

>> I only have service pack1 installed on my system which makes it a 32bit and a 64bit system

Users of Windows XP should already have installed Service Pack 3 for XP.
Users of Windows Vista should already have installed Service Pack 2 for Vista.
Users of Windows 7 should have already installed Service Pack 1 for 7.

For all 3 systems, there are 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Operating System.

In Windows XP and Vista, click "Start" and "run". Type 'winver' and press Enter,
to display whether you have the 32-bit or the 64-bit version.
In Windows 7, click "Start", and enter 'winver' in the input-area, and press Enter.

Either way, your computer needs to download and install "Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package" (either the 32-bit or the 64-bit version), because Audacity is coded using the "Visual C++" programming-language.

Bad mistake by the developers to _NOT_ make it clear that this package is a "prerequisite" for Audacity 2.0 to run.

The problem only occurs if the has an obsolete version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2008.
If the system either does not have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 or has a reasonably up to date version then the problem does not occur.
As Audacity will install and run correctly without Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 being previously installed it's not really a "prerequisite".
That Windows gives preference to an obsolete system version over the a more recent version that is included in the application folder is imho a Windows bug. Audacity cannot really be held responsible for all Windows bugs, particularly those that relate to obsolete Microsoft software.

The issue is documented in both the Frequently Asked Questions and is highlighted near the top of the Release Notes.

I hate updating my computer. I have had a lot of bad downloads in the process especially from Microsoft's own site. I have a copy of office 2008 and I think it has a Visual C ++ program on it that I just did not bother to load since I don't use it at all. I was able to install audacity on my Mac no problem but have not figured out how to turn off the built in microphone when trying to record and it ends up picking up any outside noises. Didn't have that problem with my PC since I could turn it off.
Thanks

I know what you mean, it's one of the reasons that I stopped using Windows. I don't like washing dishes either, but that's also a necessary evil sometimes ;)
