If you have been using a USB audio device, see here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ:Playback#usb

Awesome. Yeah it worked!! I need to record a small Microcassette from the Olympus pearlcorder j300 microcassette recorder. I went and bought all the attachments to hook up to my laptop hp pavillion dv9000 us using microsoft windows 7. I bought an 1/8" (3.5) mm mono male to mono female adapter. Then I bought a 6ft Auxiliary Cable to connect recording device to a headphone adapter using a usb port. Plug that into a 1/8" (3.5mm) to usb headphone adapter with microphone. (Gigaware) This adapter eliminates the need for you to purchase a specially designed usb multimedia headset in order to carry on two-way conversation on your computer. the adapter can be used to connect virtually any audio device that has a 1/8" plug. I do have both a port for headset and a port for microphone and a port with a spdif indicator on the computer itself. I still can't record properly. I am thinking I have too much connections going on. I need to be able to download on a CD from Audacity. Your help is appreciated. Thanks.

It would probably be best to simplify the set up so as to get it working, then introduce other bits if necessary. At the moment it is difficult to know where to start looking.

I'm not sure what you mean.
Are you wanting to record the audio from a CD so as to get the music onto your computer?

So what's this USB adaptor that you are using to connect the cassette player to the computer?

Not into the "headphone" socket - that's an output (for playing audio) not an input (for recording audio).
You could certainly try connecting directly to the audio input. The sound quality may be really bad, but if you successfully record something then at least we're on the way :P
