Need help with volume

Post by onepixel » Fri Apr 13, 2012 3:57 pm

Hi there,

I am brand new to Audacity. I need to record a song over an instrumental. I import the mp3 and have set everything up so I can record a song over it. I can export to mp3 etc. The singing is louder than the music but I can't figure out how to change the singing only so it matches up sound wise with the instrumental. Would anyone be kind enough to offer me some advice?

Thank you.

Assuming that you have the music on one track and the singing on another, use the "Gain Slider" on the left end of the track to adjust the volume.
Keep an eye on the playback meter while you are adjusting the levels - it's important that the overall level does not hit 0 dB, otherwise the mix will be distorted.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your reply. I hate to say this but I am totally new to Audacity and I am not sure what the gain slider is.

No problem. Have a quick read through this page: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audio_Tracks
Pretty well everything is documented, though we appreciate that it's difficult to look something up if you don't know what it's called - kind of a "Catch 22".
