Assistance needed from one well versed with Audacity

Post by mw1973 » Sat Sep 20, 2008 4:03 am

I desperately need some help here as I've been working on this for nearly two weeks and am no longer gaining any ground. To be blunt, my Wife is having an Affair. While I really do not care to expose my personal life in a Public Forum, I am at a total dead end here and need help.

Using Audacity 1.3.5 I have been able to extract virtually all of the whispered audio within a recording save for one or two words. It is the name of a place - hotel, restaurant, whatever the case may be. However, the name I am hearing is not being found in any Web search so I am clearly not hearing what I am believe I am hearing. Lest I taint your opinion I do not want to divulge the name that I believe is being said.

If someone experienced with Audacity could please listen to this segment of 00:00:07 in length and render an opinion as to what is being said, it would be appreciated beyond words. I am a Novice with this program and I am certain that someone who is intimately familiar with Audacity could do in two minutes what it is going to take me another month to work out. At least....

In any event, having suspected that she was having an Affair I setup a camcorder on the kitchen counter (lens inward towards wall so as to be inconspicuous) when our mutual friend was coming over to visit. Shortly thereafter I hit Record and excused myself to go downstairs. I returned 00:11:00 later.

The tape is laden with 'our' friend whispering, the bulk of which I was able to extract.

Of that which I am having a problem with is as follows:

Him: "Why not tomorrow night...."
Her: "Yep, you didn't hear any steps, did you? Nope!" (She's essentially saying "Keep it down. He may not in fact have gone downstairs").
Him: "Down at the _______".

So, from beginning to end we have him saying "Why not tomorrow night down at the _______?". Again, it is that last word (perhaps two) that I am unable to make out. And I've tried, believe me...I've tried until I am blue in the face.

If someone wants to help, I can provide the unmodified Project file (.aup), as well as same exported in both .MP3 and .WAV formats.

Note to the Administrators of this Forum: if you feel this is an inappropriate post, please delete same immediately!

Thank you.

Matt

You've obviously tried Effect > Amplify? Effect > Low Pass Filter, which might kill the exaggerated sibilants you might get with whispering? Effect > Change Tempo to slow it down a bit but keep the same pitch?

Thanks Gale.

Yes, I've applied all of those effects but I am still having a heck of a time pulling that out. Given the length of time that I have been engrossed in this, it very well may be that I am so used to hearing the same name over and over that I am in fact unable to hear anything else, if that makes any sense.

Having said the above about those effects I have applied, what cutoff frequency would you suggest I use for the Low Pass Filter?

Thanks again for your input; it is indeed greatly appreciated!

Circa 6000 - 8000 Hz for the cut-off? And yes if you want to click the e-mail icon under my username and send me a short (1 minute) WAV file with the words in question, and what you "think" they say, I'll have a quick play with it. Make sure your project rate bottom left of the screen is 44100 Hz. But I don't really understand why, just because this phrase is not on the internet, you think you are not hearing it right?

Gale,

Thank you very much. I am not however seeing an email icon under your username; a PM icon, but nothing to indicate therein that I can attach a file. Where should I be looking?

I do have a .WAV to send. What I believe is being said is "Down at the Riverset" or perhaps "Down at the Rivers-End". The reason I question what I am hearing is simply because this place has to exist and as such should be on the Internet in one form or another given that in the overall context this is a Hotel, Lounge, some place...but I am not finding it. They're not talking about meeting someplace to donate Blood. And as you will hear, she acknowledges it's presence with "Yep!".

Thank you - very much!

There should be an envelope icon to right of the PM icon that says "E-mail" when you hover over it.

If you are unable to attach files via e-mail then use yousendit.com or similar - get my address by clicking the same envelope icon. If preferred, simply post the link to the file on yousendit in the thread.

Why not go through the phone book for stores/restaurants etc with "Rivers" in the title, or better, hire a private investigator?

All I'm offering to do is spend 5 minutes making the audio as distinct as it can be. It's up to you what you do with it after that.

Gale,

Many thanks for your help. I'm all set on this at this point. Again, thank you very much!

Best,

Matt
