Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

And now my mic stopped. (SOLVED)

Post by Sierbahnn » Tue Mar 06, 2012 5:43 pm

I have been using Audacity for many months and it has worked like a charm.
I have not made any changes in my setup and hardware.
And now, today, it just stops taking in signals form the mic.

I can hear the mic, it works on skype and other applications, and it is selected as the source for input correctly (yes I have read the manual prior to posting. :) ). However, the wave is completely flat. It is not muted, and I can still hear it over the headset, it just won't pick the signal up and record it. I have changed to all other possible input settings in audacity and it does not make one lick of difference.
What am I missing here?

Ensure that Skype is not running in the background.
Which version of Windows are you using?
Check that the microphone is enabled and turned up in the Windows recording settings.
(note that Skype will change your computer sound settings to suit itself, even if you don't)

Skype is turned off
I am using XP sp3
Microphone is plugged in, has about 50% gain in the recording settings on sound and decides with boost enabled. I can hear it when I wear my headset (and get feedback on the spekers if I don't) but it won't "pick up" on audacity.

Ah - nevermind, it was not a fault in audacity (but gave me a reason to get hte new build, cheers for that).
It turns out that my souddriver had decided that microphones were for sissies and muted the channel, without telling windows, so it sitll showed it as active and turned on (which it was, just the input channel was muted)

Please lock this topic pretty mod. :)
