Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

HELP!

Post by slowdowngandhi » Mon Mar 05, 2012 9:04 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been using Audacity to record some research interviews for my thesis. I just moved some of the files to my dropbox (still as .aup files) to share them
but forgot to export them properly first. Now my laptop won't let me open any of them - it keeps just saying "Couldn't find the project data folder".
These interviews can't be repeated because of the people involved, and they are absolutely crucial.

Can someone please, please, please tell me if I can get them back, and, if so, how I go about doing it? I'm having a major panic here!

Please read: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_Projects

The .aup file is only part of your project. It references a folder with the same name as the project with "_data" appended. The _data folder must be in the same directory as the .aup file.

So you need to get the .aup files back "beside" the _data folders.

This advice is a little late, but your computer is probably the least reliable gadget you own!!! If you are recording something critical, where there's no possibiity of "take-2", I recommend a backup system recording in parallel. And, it's a good idea to take notes even if you are using a stand-alone digital recorder (or tape recorder).

...It's not always the computer's fault, that it's unreliable. Sometimes it's software or the user, but whatever the cause most of use have trouble with our computer from time-to-time.

Thanks Bill, I had a panic for a second because I googled it and found someone's answer saying that you couldn't get them back together once you'd broken the link. But you can and I did, thanks!

Glad you recovered your work. Too bad there's "bad" answers out there, but that's the internet.

I always create a folder to each project. The .aup file and the _data folder live in that folder. If I need to move it, I just move the folder.
