windows 7 + fono mini + edirol ua-25 + audacity

Post by cafedelmike » Sun Mar 04, 2012 5:47 pm

I've recently upgraded my operating sytem from xp to windows 7 and now my rega fono mini is not being recognized properly-keeps throwing up an error code 43. I've had it working a couple of times but when it did none of the sliders worked on audacity(output or input) and I couldn't get a recording out of it. I know this is not purely an audacity problem but was wondering if anyone else has used one of these phono usb boxes with windows 7, and if so how do you get it to work. It worked perfectly with audacity on xp so I know its not my hardware at fault. I'm still waiting on a reply from the rega dealer that sold me the fono at the moment but if anyone can come up with a workaround or solution it would be greatly appreciated cos I'm pulling my hair out trying to get it to work!

Right-click over the speaker icon in the System Tray and select Recording Devices.
Right-click anywhere inside the Recording tab and choose "Show disabled devices" then right-click again and check "Show Disconnected Devices".
Ensure that the fono mini is listed and enabled as a recording device.
If it is, then open Audacity (or if Audacity is already open, close it and restart Audacity).
Look for a USB option in the Recording Input of the Audacity Device Toolbar.

This is now the third time I've tried to reply because my computer keeps randomly switching itself off after the latest service pack was installed. I've had it working as a once off but now it comes up with error code 43 and I cant get past this problem. audacity cannot work because the audio codec is missing and wont install. Think this is purely a windows 7 compatibility issue and now with these random crashes I'm getting really fed up. Wish I'd never wiped xp, or at least done a dual boot. Before I upgraded to windows 7 I ran the compatibility software provided by microsoft and apart from needing an extra driver for my graphics card everything was supposed to be ready. in fact forget all that because as I write on my laptop my pc has crashed again and it says it cannot find sata-0 so obviously something is seriously wrong with the hardware!
Anyway, thanks for replying Steve; it seems I now have more than just a headache to contend with!!!

Computer crashes these days are almost always due to driver problems (and error code 43 would tend to confirm that).

If your computer is a branded computer, try going to the manufacturers web site and see if they provide drivers for use with Win 7.
If your computer is unbranded you will need to look at each part of the computer in turn, then go to the manufacturers web sites to get the appropriate drivers. The components to look at first are the motherboard, the sound card and the video card. The sound card and/or video card may be built into the motherboard.

Motherboards usually have the manufacturer's name and the model number printed on the motherboard. If this is a full-size computer it should be quite easy to just take the side off the machine and have a look. If you're not very technical, be careful not to dislodge any wires inside the case - in particular avoid unplugging anything and ensure that the wires are clear of the fan(s) when you put the case back on.

There is also a free utility called Belarc Advisor that can help identify the make/model of the computer components.
