Newbie - Can't delete silence

While recording my first album, I went off to do something else and forgot about it. The music stopped but Audacity kept recording. I have about a half hour of silence that I want to delete. I can select it, but "Cut" is not activated on the Edit menu, and the cut tool doesn't work either. What should I do? Thanks in advance!

Select the silent section - one of the easiest ways is to put your cursor where the silence begins - then click Edit/Select/Cursor To End. Then simply hit the Delete key on your keyboard - or Ctrl-X to cut.

BTW - the normal reason that Cut (and other stuff) are not activated is that no section of Audio is selected - though I note from your posting that you say that you had seleced it - this is puzzling!

Hey WC -- thanks a lot! That worked. I suspect the program had gotten itself wedged somehow because today when I started up again, everything works as expected, including the selection/cut operation. Live and learn! Thanks for your reply.
