Guys,

I'm brainless tech-wise. I have audacity installed (latest version for Windows 7) and can record just fine. But I can't hear playback...don't know why...whether it's in the Audacity preferences or someething in my computer. I can hear everything else fine (audio from websites, etc.) but can't hear playback and I need to edit the voiceover that I'm recording. Any thoughts?

What does it say when you click on the speaker icon rollup/dropdown? Realtek AC97, something, something?

are you talking about the speaker icon on the lower right on my computer? IF so, it says IDT High Definition Audio CODEC...I don't see a speaker icon on audacity itself.
And sorry if I'm breaking protocol...don't usually use this stuff so am unfamiliar with proedure, if there's a more acceptable way, let me know.

Not at all nuhouse, I think that Koz's comment was regarding trying to answer DJSULLY at the same time as taking to you. As you started this topic we'll look primarily at your question. Hopefully doing so will also benefit DJSULLY, but if not then DJSULLY can start a new topic and get our undivided attention.

Are you using a USB microphone? If so, the problem is that Windows is trying to play back through your microphone. To get Audacity to play back through the normal sound card, set the playback device to your normal sound card using the Device Toolbar.

Sorry, now that I think about it, where would I locate the "device toolbar"...is that in Windows or is it in the actual Audacity program? Right now my Audacity preference for playback, where it says "device" it says "Primary Sound Driver"...but I've tried it with that, and the other option is "Speaker/Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC).

You are probably looking in Audacity Preferences but Device Toolbar is in the main Audacity window (click the following link: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Device_Toolbar ) .

Speaker/Headphones (IDT High Definition CODEC) looks like the device you should be using. Are you trying to listen through headphones or without headphones? If without, make sure no headphones (or any other device) is connected to the green audio output jack.

If you are sure the Audacity output slider by the speaker symbol is turned up, right-click over that speaker symbol by the clock > Playback Devices. You want to right-click over "Speaker/Headphones (IDT High Definition CODEC)" and see if there is an item that says "Enable" - choose it if there is. If that does not help, right click again, choose "Properties". Look at the "Levels" tab - make sure you have not muted the device.

If that does not help, click OK to go back to the Playback tab where you see "Speaker/Headphones (IDT High Definition CODEC)". Can you post an image of that window?
To do that, hold ALT and press PrtScr. Open Paint. Click the Windows globe. Type "Paint" (without quotes) in the search box. Click the link to the Paint program when it appears. Paste. Save as a PNG image. Click "Uplaod attachment" underneath where you post to upload and attach the image.
