Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Echo....not wanted.

Post by natedog » Wed Jan 04, 2012 9:53 pm

Hello again.
When is record in stereo in audacity, the first track is great. However, the rest of the tracks record all the tracks above, just softer. I know this can happen with a microphone (like a microphone pick up sound from headphones) but i'm recording my piano with a stereo cable plugged into my blue stereo jack on my computer. how can record and not get that delayed echo recording but still listen to the other tracks (since you can't record the piano without a listening to the beat, etc.) Thanks for the terrific help.

In Audacity, you can get that if you have Audacity Preferences > Recording > [X] Playthrough selected by accident. De-select. You should have [X] Overdubbing selected.

On Windows you can also cause trouble by recording Stereo Mix, or Mix-Out instead of a standard sound device like Mic-In or Line-In. Set in Windows Control Panels.

HELLO? can someone help me. i'm recording through my blue stereo-in jack. that's how i plug in my keyboard to my computer. what do i need to do so my other tracks do NOT record the track above it. in audacity, my input device is set to "Line in/Mic in: Stereo Mix" and my output is set to "Realtek HD Audio rear output".

Your input device should not be set to "Stereo Mix".
What options are there in the recording input device setting?

The most likely options are:

Input: "line in/mic in: line volume"
Output: "Realtek HD Audio front output"

Your keyboard should be plugged into the Light Blue socket.
Your headphones should be plugged into the Lime Green socket.

"Transport menu > Overdub" should be enabled (ticked).
"Transport menu > Software Playthrough" should not be enabled (not ticked).

i did all of that except and it still doesn't change anything. i don't have the realtek hd audio front ouput as an option for an output. i only have the rear output as an option. should i plug my headphones into the light green socket in the back of my computer? since they are plugged into the light green socket on the front?

Let's take this a little backwards. Open up your browser and surf to a place playing music such as YouTube ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-8bSZa4Fjg&NR=1

... and then start Audacity and press record. Do you record the YouTube sound?

The front and back colored sound connectors should be copies of each other. You should be able to plug your headphones into either green connector and listen.
